back to NMSTE 2011 Landing Page

Resources from this webinar, presented April 29, 2011 for NMSTE 2011 Virtual Strand:

Benefits of group work, specifically in online courses as noted by participants in NMSTE 2011 Webinar

  • Student Engagement
  • Helps interpersonal learners process information
  • student connection with each other and the course and the course/school. helps with the detachment many feel
  • networking with peeps all over the country
  • positive connections vs. cliques
  • critical thinking skill development
  • When you go for a JOB INTERVIEW IN NON-EDUCATIONAL COMPANIES, THE FIRST THING THEY SEEM TO ASK IS “are you a team player?”
  • absolutely, group work makes everyone think about what we are learning in different ways
  • preparation of students for their futures
  • reduces feelings of isolation
  • Increased learning how to learn
  • knowledge building, rather than data absorption
  • increases retention of your learners
  • builds community
  • working whenever a group needs to work
  • helps form teams
  • encourages deeper processing/understanding of concepts
  • increases feedback
  • It’s an opportunity to hear ESP in online courses.
  • Students can learn from one another.
  • makes students responsible to one another, not just to instructor
  • learns processes not facts
  • Encourages creativity

Challenges of group work, specifically in online courses as noted by participants in NMSTE 2011 Webinar

  • Technology!
  • Some people in the group might not pull their own weight.
  • Setting expectations and timelines
  • non participatory students / group members
  • Some one might want to take over
  • Conflict in personalities
  • flexibility of work time is a main reason peeps take online. groupwork can be impacted by student schedules
  • Different learning style, as in individual vs. group
  • Time constraints prevent students from working together synchronously
  • Students in online courses feel removed from each other so the content is not explored as deeply
  • You have to make sure that students each get the most out of their group experience.
  • Organization skills or lack thereof
  • equity for me as a teacher is effort. Did everyone work as hard? The tech specialist might do more work, but did they put forth effort? did the tech novice let the expert do all the work?
  • Are the new tech tools effective?
  • it takes practice for students to get good at group work. I often have students identify their own strengths and roles for the group.
  • Conflict of ownership of ideas as in who gets the credit
  • Stronger learners who feel an imposition to help the not so strong learner
  • Different self-confidence levels
