Activity: Scavenger Hunt

  1. Mute your iPad's volume.
  2. Lock your iPad's rotation.
  3. Open the Safari app & use the Home button to return to the Home screen
  4. Search your iPad for "Maps", open the Maps app, and use a multi-tasking gesture to return to the home
  5. Create a folder for all of the Photography Apps - Camera, Photos, and Photobooth
  6. Move the folder to a different screen
  7. Put an app on the dock
  8. Toggle your iPad's wifi off/on.
  9. Close all of the open apps. 
  10. Turn on the Assistive technology, "Speak Selection" and try it out in Safari

Typing (p27-30) and Notes (chapter 15)  

  • Keyboard shortcuts
    • Special characters (e.g., é, å) - hold down the corresponding character 
    • Type to spaces to create a period and space
    • In mail, hold down the period key to get common email endings like .com
    • In Safari, there is a .com in the keyboard. Hold down .com to get other common endings
    • Usually can skip the apostrophe in contractions. Auto-correct will add it.
    • If auto-correct word suggestion is word you are typing, can hit space to finish word 
    • Click the .?123 & slide to a key to quickly select a key and switch back to ABC view. 

 

Activity: Acrostic Poem or Name Poem 

  1. Go to Settings, General, International, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, Add the Emoji keyboard
  2. Go Home and open Notes
  3. Create new note and tap on note to bring up the keyboard
  4. Type your first name ALL IN CAPS
  5. Hit return 2x and type the first letter of your first name
  6. Type the second letter of your first name and hit return 2x and so until your first name is spelled vertically
  7. Pick a work that describes you and starts with the first letter of your first name.
  8. Type a short phrase to expand on the word.
  9. Complete your Name Poem
  10. Tap on the world symbol on the keyboard and add emoticons to your poem

Activity 1: Share your poem via a web-based email program

  • In Notes, select your poem and copy it
  • In Safari, login to your email program
  • Compose an email to kerryf@nmsu.edu
  • Paste your poem into the body of the email 
  • Send Email 

 

Activity 2: Illustrate a concept

  • Use the iPad's camera to take 5 photos or a video of one of the following:
    • A geometric shape: Rectangles, Circles, Triangles, etc.
    • Examples of different kinds of plants
    • A walk-through of the classroom or school

 

Activity 3: Plan a trip

  • Use your iPad to plan a road trip
    • What is your destination?
    • What is the weather like? 
    • How long will it take to get there?
    • Find a hotel, restaurant and attraction to visit.

 

Activity 4: Bridge to Practice

  • Use Safari to come up with 2 ideas for using iPads in your classroom

  • Maximizing battery life 
    • Use your iPad regularly
    • Do not leave your iPad in the car (iPad is designed to work in conditions ranging from 32° to 95° F. Ideally at room temperature)
    • Don't charge your iPad in a carrying case 
    • Lock your iPad when not in use
    • Adjust your brightness
    • Manage use of applications
    • Turn off bluetooth when not using it
    • Turn off WiFi when not using it 
    • Minimize use of location services
    • Turn off push locations
